George Neskis
Before George Neskis defended people, he sat on the other side of the aisle. From 1985 to 1989 he was an Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney for the City of Norfolk, which means he spent four years learning exactly how the Commonwealth builds a case — which files it likes, which it quietly worries about, and where the seams are. He has spent every year since using it the other way round.
A Norfolk native, George took his degree at Virginia Tech and his law degree at the University of Richmond, and was admitted in 1984. He defends criminal and traffic charges in all seven cities: driving while intoxicated and driving under the influence, speeding and reckless driving, and preliminary hearings on felonies including possession with intent, drug offenses, driving on a suspended license, hit and run, domestic assault, and habitual offender. Super Lawyers has named him among Virginia’s top criminal defense attorneys, and the Virginia Bar Association has listed him in Virginia’s Legal Elite for both criminal law and civil litigation.
His peers went further than that. They elected him Chairman of the Criminal Law Section of the Virginia State Bar — the attorneys who practice criminal law across the Commonwealth put him in charge of the section that represents them.

Two threads run through George’s civic life, and both are about belonging somewhere for a long time. The first is the profession: chairman of the Virginia State Bar’s Criminal Law Section, chairman of the Chesapeake Bar ASAP Policy Board, a member of the Bench Bar Relations Committee of the Norfolk and Portsmouth Bar Association, and a past president of the Law & Disorderly Club. Bench Bar Relations is worth pausing on — it is the committee that keeps the working relationship between judges and the lawyers who appear before them healthy. Defense attorneys who get asked onto it are the ones both sides trust.
The second thread is Norfolk’s Greek community, which is where his family’s roots are. He is a past vice president of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church Parish Council, a past president of the Order of AHEPA, and a past president of the Cyprus Benevolent Society. He is also secretary of the Norfolk Boat Club — fitting for a man whose favorite place in the region is the water outside his own office window. “I love the Elizabeth River right here in front of our firm,” he says. “It’s just amazing, the things that go on here.”

The rest of his time goes to Virginia Tech, the Grateful Dead, and old cars. He went to Tech and follows the Hokies in basketball and football. He is a serious Deadhead — forty-nine shows — and a genuine champion of the local jam scene, naming Last Fair Deal and Grateful Jed among the talent worth turning out for. And he collects antique cars: a ’64 Buick LeSabre, a ’67 Thunderbird, a ’67 VW Beetle, a ’78 F150 and more, all of which he and his sons keep running themselves.
