Virginia then makes the whole thing harder than it needs to be. Virginia DMV figures put Chesapeake at 2,459 crashes in 2024. In them, 1,548 people were injured and nineteen were killed. Speed was a factor in 532 of those crashes on its own, injuring 331 people. Alcohol accounted for another 127, injuring 89 and killing five.
The geography explains most of the pattern. I-64 and I-464 carry interstate volume through the north of the city — VDOT counts better than seventy thousand vehicles a day over the High Rise Bridge alone. Route 168 runs the Outer Banks traffic straight down the middle. Route 17 over Dominion Boulevard moves freight, which puts loaded trucks on the same asphalt as commuters. And Battlefield Boulevard changes character three or four times over its length, commercial and signal-heavy through Greenbrier, then progressively more open the further south of Great Bridge you get.
That mix is why so many Chesapeake crash files involve a driver from somewhere else, and why the two accounts of what happened so rarely agree. It is also why the early work matters more here. Nobody in this file lives around the corner from the intersection, and memory of a road you drove once is the least reliable evidence there is.
